About the Customer
The new £3.5m bus station at Rawtenstall is part of the Economy Recovery Growth Deal supported multi-million-pound phase one Spinning Point redevelopment of Rossendale, Lancashire.
The new bus station was built to replace the original 1970’s bus station, which was causing problems for the public as it let both the cold and rain in via a leaking roof. The aim of the project was to create a welcoming, warm and safe place for passengers to start and end their journeys and to ensure that local communities and businesses remained connected.

What UK Curtain Walling did
For this project UK Curtain Walling were appointed by Barnfield Construction Ltd to design, supply and install bespoke Senior Aluminium System’s SF52 Curtain Walling glazed with high performance sealed units to external elevations, bus bays, concourse and the ticket office.
The team fitted the bus bays with commercial sliding doors, each operated by Record UK Ltd automatic sliding door gear. Each bus bay door was linked to inductive loops set beneath the ground, which detected the weight of the bus wheels either opening the doors on a timed approach or closing the doors on departure.
This impressive installation was achieved by using Senior’s slimline thermally efficient SF52 aluminium curtain walling to create a bright, modern and energy efficient façade for the new-look bus station. The enhanced thermal performance and robust construction has helped create a more comfortable and energy-efficient interior environment.

The Result
The Rawtenstall Bus Station project ran from June to September 2019 providing results that were based not only a function, but due to the intricate architectural design of the external envelope of the building, also produced a stunning façade which ran round the building.
Installed throughout the new 8 stand station, the curtain walling opens up the main entrance, retail units and stand areas to maximise the flow of natural light during the day. At night the extensive use of glazed curtain walling and both exterior and internal lighting also makes the facility a safer place for passengers travelling after dusk.
This was very much a collaborative project which presented numerous technical and logistical challenges along the way. However, UK Curtain Walling Ltd and Record UK Ltd worked together to provide a fully automated passenger bus bay door access system, providing controlled passenger movement to access and alight from the buses.
