UK Curtain Walling Ltd is proud to have contributed specialist glazing expertise to the major redevelopment of Darlington Station – one of the most significant investments on the East Coast Main Line in recent years.

Backed by £113 million of Government investment, the transformation has delivered two new station platforms, a new eastern concourse, improved passenger facilities and a new 50-tonne footbridge providing step-free access to the new platforms.

Working as part of this significant infrastructure project, UK Curtain Walling completed the specialist glazing works to the new footbridge, drawing on more than 25 years of industry experience and the team’s extensive knowledge of complex rail environments.

Supporting a major transformation at Darlington Station

The redevelopment of Darlington Station was delivered while the existing station remained live and operational, adding another layer of complexity to an already substantial engineering project.

The wider scheme included:

  • Two new station platforms
  • A new 50-tonne footbridge providing step-free access
  • A reimagined entrance hall with new escalators, lifts and stairs
  • A new eastern concourse
  • A multi-storey car park with more than 600 spaces
  • New cycle routes and secure bike facilities

The historic nature of Darlington Station also had to be carefully considered throughout the development, with work taking place alongside the Grade II-listed Victorian station.

Specialist glazing for the new footbridge

UK Curtain Walling’s involvement centred on the new bridge structure, providing specialist glazing solutions designed to perform within the demanding environment of a busy railway station.

Rail infrastructure requires more than an off-the-shelf glazing solution. Systems must meet stringent technical and safety requirements while also supporting accessibility, durability and the overall architectural design of the structure.

Our experience working on railway bridges and stations allowed the team to bring practical specialist knowledge to the project, working collaboratively with the wider project team to deliver the required glazing installation.

The finished bridge now forms a prominent part of the transformed station, providing passengers with an accessible route between the new platforms.

Part of a growing rail portfolio

Darlington is one of more than 20 railway bridge and station projects UK Curtain Walling has supported since the company was established in 2017.

Our experience includes projects at Manor Park, Seven Kings, Coulsdon South, Canterbury East, Crawley, Eridge, Farnborough North, Ashley Down, Harrow-on-the-Hill, Liphook, Hackney Central, Catford, Tottenham Hale, St Erth, Petts Wood, Stoneleigh, Bexley, Redhill, Garforth and Shortlands, alongside the major redevelopment of Derby Station.

More recently, following completion at Darlington, the team has been supporting the significant Access for All improvements at Hither Green Station, another major bridge project designed to improve accessibility for passengers.

Recognised in Rail Construction News

The scale of the Darlington redevelopment has now been highlighted in the July 2026 edition of Rail Construction News, which includes extensive coverage of the completed station.

UK Curtain Walling also features separately in the publication, highlighting our specialist glazing expertise and growing track record within UK rail infrastructure.

For our team, it’s fantastic to see a project we’ve contributed to receiving this level of industry recognition – and to see the finished station now serving passengers.
